Gentle Dentistry
Sedation Dentistry is used in our office to help patients relax and have a more comfortable visit to the dentist. Three levels of sedation are available to allow for individual needs and comfort. The doctor will work with you to decide which choice is best for you.
Nitrous Oxide (N20) is often referred to as "laughing gas." It simply allows the patient to feel more relaxed if they are apprehensive about having dental work performed. The nitrous stays in the patient's system only as long it is inhaled. The patient is still able to drive and function normally after the procedure is completed.
Valium is an anti-anxiety medication used primarily for short time relief of mild to moderate anxiety. It helps prevent nervousness and tension that is sometimes caused by the thought of receiving dental work. Only available by prescription, Valium is in pill form and taken orally one hour or the night before the appointment.
Halcion is a conscious sedative use to calm the nerves. Patients who are extremely nervous about receiving dental care have the option of using halcion. Halcion is given in a pill form taken approximately one hour before the appointment. The effects of halcion vary from person to person; however, most patients report little to no recollection of the appointment. (Amnesia) |
